DKC’s Second M.S. Weeknight Tournament Gets a Visit from State Senator Haley

October 17th – DEBATE-Kansas City’s second middle school tournament of the season was held at West Middle and included a visit from Kansas State Senator David Haley. Over 200 students from nearly 20 schools competed for awards in student congress and policy debate and they impressed Senator Haley.

“The level of preparation and of delivery by these young people bodes well for their personal academic and professional futures as well as for the potential development of  sharp, articulate, quick thinking leadership,” said Senator Haley. “I sincerely am impressed and commend Debate-KC for the resources and staff they have dedicated to our district to hone our children into such keen debate competitors.”

West’s debate coach Christine Young extended an invitation to Senator Haley and he made time to watch youngsters practice the art of democratic speech. The Vice President of DKC’s Board, Shane Mecham, provided the Senator a tour of the tournament that allowed him to watch speeches and arguments from a number of DKC middle school students.

“DKC was honored to have an elected representative attend one of our tournaments and listen to the voices of our students,” said Gabe Cook, DKC’s Director. “Senator Haley’s presence communicated the value of debate to our students and helped inspire them to become future leaders.”

Awards Winners

Once the two rounds of debate were complete students received dinner as they waited for awards. Fifty three trophies were earned and the biggest, the overall school sweepstakes award, boiled down to a competition between three familiar schools: Foreign Language Academy, Sumner and Arrowhead, with Arrowhead taking first.

DKC’s next weeknight tournament will be at Washington High School on Tuesday, October 29th. Find the entire DKC Tournament Schedule.
