High School City Championship Recap

DKC hosted its annual City Championship tournament for high school policy debate on the weekend of December 1st-2nd. Held at UMKC, three divisions of policy debate were held, with varsity competing for a chance to compete at the Urban Debate National Tournament in Washington D.C. This fall. With over six high schools vying for a chance to win City Champs honors, the weekend offered a ton of exciting and engaging debates.

In the novice the division, Jamaiyah Amerison of University Academy took top speaker honors. Jafar Al-Hassan of Lincoln Prep took home second place honors. And following in third was Michelle Sall of Lincoln Prep. Jamaiyah Amerison defeated the team of Lincoln team of Michelle Sall and Emmarie Miller in finals. Ending in third place was the Lincoln team of Jafar Al-Hassan and Tino Seebart.

In the junior varsity division, Gabriela Perez of Sumner Academy took home first place speaker honors. Charlie Ortiz of Lincoln Prep took home second speaker honors. Kimberely Vera joined her teammate Gabriela Perez, earning third place speaker honors. Maqdas Bhatti and Keion Gines of Lincoln Prep took home first place team honors, followed by the Sumner team of Gabriela Perez and Kimberly Vera. Charlie Ortiz and Connor Stanley of Lincoln Prep took home third place team honors.

In the varsity division, Neymara Freeman of Sumner Academy took home top speaker honors. Following in second place was Bridget Vogan of Turner high took home second place honors. Following her partner, Jaleon Brown of Sumner took home third place speaker honors. Jaleon Brown and Neymara Freeman of Sumner defeated Turner’s Bridget Vogan and Cyra Chronister in the finals of varsity, earning a trip to Washington D.C. Anaia Johnson and Chyler Backstrom of Turner took home third place honors.

A special thanks to the UMKC Debate team and Barstow Debate for giving time to judge many of our rounds. And a special thanks to the DKC alums and community members who also gave their time to the many students who competed this weekend.
