2023 MOCK TRIAL SUMMER ACADEMY
The UMKC School of Law and School of Humanities and Social Sciences have partnered with DEBATE-KC to launch the first High School Mock Trial Sumer Academy.
- The program runs from June 12 through June 23, 2023.
- Each student will stay in a UMKC dorm along with their cohort for the two weeks.
- Students will attending classes, lectures and laboratories on mock trial practice and procedure.
- Students will participate in team building activities and interact with current UMKC students in an academic environment.
- As a cap stone activity students will compete in a complete Mock Trial before a sitting judge and a jury of law students and practitioners.
These experiences will demystify college life and serve as the foundation for developing an educational and vocational plan for these students to practice law.
In very real terms supporting this program is building the infrastructure for a more diverse and inclusive pipeline to law school and legal practice. This is a great experience for any high school student interested in practicing law or learning about the US legal system.

KC we need your financial support to make this experience a reality! This opportunity will be provided to the students selected free of charge to encourage participation from traditionally marginalized communities. However food, lodging, instructors, and facilities all have associated costs. We need individuals, corporations and law firms to donate and help us build this program. All donations go directly to support local students in participating in this one-of-a-kind experience!
Mock Trial is not only an excellent opportunity to develop public speaking and persuasion skills, it is also a unique opportunity to expose students to the United States Legal system, and the inner workings of the courtroom. Participating in Mock Trial also promotes collaborative working skills and improve critical thinking and analysis.
By partnering with UMKC’s Mock Trial Team, we at DEBATE-KC hope to encourage students to pursue a career in the legal field, by providing networking opportunities with practicing attorneys, all while engaging in an activity that make college applications stand out! After completing this program, students will not only have exposure to the legal process, but a first-hand look at college life, and a road-map to academic success after high school!
