Harnessing the power of ETH to support the work of DEBATE-Kansas City

DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) is doing something unique for #GivingTuesday this year. While many non-profits accept #crypto donations. They almost always immediately sell it.

DKC Weeknight Debate Tournament

This year DKC (A non-profit that has served over 12,000 middle and high school students in Kansas City) is going to take #ETH donations and hold them via staking. Think of staking like interest from a checking account, ETH holders are compensated a percentage (5-15%) for how much ETH they stake. Essentially, creating a mini-endowment where the ETH donations will be staked and only the staking rewards (interest) will be sold on a yearly basis to help support DKC programing in Kansas City Schools.

Staking isn’t new, but recently institutional grade custodians have emerged who make this opportunity available for small non-profits and organizations like DKC. Allowing DKC to harness the power of the blockchain to support real world programing that makes our schools and community better.

A .1 Eth donation can make sure one student can attend, participate in a debate tournament a year forever.

A 1 ETH donation allows an entire tournament to go on forever.

The point is this revenue will provide for support for programing in perpetuity.

Join us on Giving Tuesday on Twitch

We will be launching this campaign and Twitch streaming on Tuesday November 30th and welcome you to join us to learn more about the work we do and why we are implementing this ETH hold/stake/endowment approach.

If you want to support this new approach to crypto donations please consider donating to DKC and share this unique opportunity with others that may be interested and join us on Tuesday the 30th.While we are a small non-profit, we believe we have a big impact, we are hopeful that the success of this approach will not only empower us to do our work for years to come but encourage more non-profits to take a hold and stake approach to donations. Thus growing an entire new way to support people and institutions doing great work in our communities

Frequently Asked Questions / Details

Where can I donate?

Please send ETH to: debatekc.eth

This is an Ethereum Name Service address that resolves to our Ethereum address of 0x3705EF302eB9493f7483ad524a772eAB8Abbc170

What is your goal?

We hope to raise 32 ETH (the equivalent of one node). This will help achieve our primary goal to provide long term financial security for Debate Kansas City which provides policy debate opportunities to 1000+ students each year. Our secondary goal is to show that it is viable for nonprofits to accept crypto donations and not immediately sell them, but rather stake them to achieve long-term financial goals.

Can I donate crypto other than ETH?

You can donate any crypto that is on the Ethereum network or is on an EVM comptable network (such as Fantom, Matic and BNB). Please note that our current staking plan only allows for ETH so these tokens will be converted to ETH. All donations are appreciated. If you have specific questions please email Isaac Allen, Executive Director of Debate Kansas City, at DEBATEKC@gmail.com.

How will you stake the donated ETH?

We plan to use Staked.us as part of their Staked ETH Trust. Having an institutional custody provider was the biggest barrier to a small nonprofit staking crypto as part of an endowment, and Staked.com meets our requirements while charging reasonable fees. Staked.us solutions are currently used by 3AC, Multicoin, Galaxy, Coinbase Venture and many others., If we were to receive more than our goal amount, we would consider additional staking options (including decentralized options such as Lido) to decrease slashing and counterparty risks.

Why Donate ETH?

Donating ETH is potentially more tax efficient than donating cash and can extend the impact of your gift.  Since DKC is a 501C3 the donation likely is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. Ultimately this means up to 30% more value to DKC and your tax deduction. Obviously every situation is different so consult your tax and legal professionals to see how donating

What documentation will DKC provide for my ETH gift?

DKC can provide donors with a tax letter that states the Etherium address a donation originated from, the time and date said donation was received. It is incumbent on the donor to demonstrate ownership of the originating address and any other information necessary to claim the donation for tax or any other purpose.

If a donor wishes to request a donation letter please email debatekc@gmail.com and DKC staff will collect the necessary information such as name, address and originating ETH address to mail or e-mail your donation receipt.
