DKC Middle School Workshop Recap

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

On September 25th, DKC held its annual middle school policy debate workshop at the Pierson auditorium, on UMKC. Beginning at 9am and ending around 1pm, students from around the league learned about DKC history, the benefits of the program, and viewed a demonstration debate from area college debaters.

Using the high school resolution, The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States, debaters from Johnson County Community College, UMKC, and Kansas City Kansas Community College debated over the necessity of increasing H-2B worker visas. During the demo debate, students were given the opportunity to ask the debaters questions regarding the arguments that were made, pointers for deploying different strategies, and their personal opinions on the subject matter. At the conclusion of the debate, students were able to render a decision on the debate, with the majority agreeing that H-2B visas should be increased for migrant workers.

Afterwards, students were given a chance to give their own speeches on the subject, with each school sending a representative to speak either in favor or against increasing H-2B visa access. The workshop was a fantastic opportunity to prepare the league for the first middle school tournament at Arrowhead middle, and could not have been possible without the excellent debaters from UMKC, JCCC, KCKCC, the DKC staff, the coaches, and all of the students eager to learn more about policy debate!
