In the 8th grade, I joined congressional debate and have never left! Once I learned the ropes of debate, I found my calling in competitive speech at Sumner Academy. However, it would not have been as successful, enticing, or meaningful without DEBATE-Kansas City!
During my senior year, I put together a performance aff-not always the most loved style on our circuit. But with the amazing mentorship from the Head Coach of Sumner Academy, Jamelle Brown, and DKC Staff of the time, Gabe and Isaac- I was able to feel empowered in my message!
Speech not only helped me find my voice, but it also taught me how to hone my presentation skills! Those skills granted me scholarships to be able to attend college at Kansas State University, and later graduated as a K-State Speech Alumna. While at K-State, I also had the privilege of serving as the American Forensic Association National Student Representative.
Now, I get to use those skills with helping my teams as an assistant speech coach. Work my media magic as DKC’s media relations coordinator. And recently, be hired by the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) to educate our community on ways to end sexual violence. Lastly, rising from my previous policy debate experience, I serve Heartland Arts KC as an art fellow to address local policy concerns through performance art.
All this is to say, speech and debate can teach you so many versatile skills! Communication continues to be one of the most sought-after skills by employers. Speech is an activity where you get out of it, what you put into it! If you have NSDA or NAUDL aspiration, you can do it (if you put in the time)!
But ultimately, my main words of advice are to
A) Speak your truth
B) Do your best
C) HAVE FUN!
Thank you Marley Kay for sharing their words of advice with DKC for our Thankful Tuesdays!
Until next Tuesday,
DKC Fam
