My Debate-Kansas City journey began in the 7th grade at Central Middle School when my advocate and debate sponsor told me I should join Debate because of my big mouth, the best advice I had ever gotten. After I graduated high school, I served as an assistant debate and forensic coach at Wyandotte High School.
Throughout my time as a debater at Central Middle School and Wyandotte High School it allowed me to perfect my speaking skills, but also use my voice as one of my biggest tools throughout my education, career, and life. It was never about winning on both debate teams, however it was always about our personal development and commitment, which were two values I’ve held close in my journey throughout debate and life.
Through the various debate-tournaments, workshops, mentorship, and built relationships throughout the Debate Kansas City community, I’ve developed various skills beyond just public speaking, but networking, researching, adaptability and reasoning.
For future DKC students or debaters my biggest piece of advice is to be your authentic selves. Debate isn’t only about public speaking and sharing found information, but it’s also about connecting your true self to your work, no one can tell your story better than yourself.
Thank you Gary for sharing some amazing wisdom with DKC for our Thankful Tuesdays!
Until next Tuesday,
DKC Fam
