Jazz on the Ledge will be held Saturday June 7th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Shades of Jade will be play atop the Baltimore Club where there’s an amazing view of Kansas City. Fried catfish and okra will be served along with special drinks. Tickets are still available for $50 and sold here via PayPal. And please don’t let rain chances worry you because we have indoor space if needed. The event sponsors are: the UMKC School of Law, Western & Southern Life, Scout Investments, Greg and Sybil Orman and Drs. Milton and Trudi Grin. DKC greatly appreciates their support along with hosts: Quinton Shaw, Lyn Shaw and Dennis Langley.
Those attending Jazz on the Ledge will be able to celebrate an achievement that last year’s event set in motion: Debate is back at Central! A coach and class are in place and Central’s membership to DKC has been covered by community donations, largely from last year’s Jazz on the Ledge. The debate team so successful they literally had a book (Cross-X) written about them will be entering tournaments once again after a three year hiatus.
Last year’s guest speaker was Ryan Wash, a Central graduate that made college debate history. Ryan is once again attending Jazz on the Ledge but the keynote speaker will be another DKC graduate, Desmond Mason. And not only is Mr. Mason speaking about his experiences with debate, he’s also playing keyboards in Shades of Jade.
“Desmond is one of my all-time favorite debaters,” said Malcolm Gordon who coached Desmond at UMKC both in college and during summer debate camp. Desmond has been well-liked by his debate coaches because he’s genuine, incredibly polite and gifted. Desmond rarely complained and never created excuses, something rare in our world, let alone in the world of debate.
These qualities have also helped Desmond Mason in his music career as he’s now the keyboardist/pianist for Shades of Jade. According to their website Shades of Jade, “Is best described as a ‘Neo-Soul Quartet’. Comprised of some of the most capable Jazz musicians in the Kansas City area, Shades of Jade genuinely connects with its audience members of young and young at heart by blending the energy and feel of R&B music of the 90’s with the traditional Kansas City roots of Jazz from the 40’s to the late 60’s.”
When purchasing tickets simply make a note on the PayPal transaction that you are purchasing tickets for Jazz on the Ledge. Really, what would you would rather be doing than listening to jazz, eating fried catfish and drinking cold beverages from an amazing view of the city? And did we mention all of this supports a great cause – giving more students in Kansas City access to academic debate.
Once again we thank our sponsors: the UMKC School of Law, Western & Southern Life, Scout Investments, Greg and Sybil Orman and Drs. Milton and Trudi Grin. DKC greatly appreciates their support along with our generous hosts: Quinton Shaw, Lyn Shaw and Dennis Langley.
