UPDATE: Danny Parkins host of The Drive the number one sports radio show in Kansas City was the keynote speaker at two DEBATE-Kansas City recruitment workshops. A former high school debater, Danny first attended the high school workshop on September 11th and two weeks later he returned to greet middle school students. At both events Danny was gracious with his time and fielded questions from students for 20 minutes. Below you will find the high school and then middle school workshop summaries.

The DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) season was officially kicked-off at the 2015 DKC High School Recruitment Workshop on Friday, September 11th with special guest and former debater Danny Parkins, host of The Drive on 610 Sports.

Danny talked about his experience as a debater and how it now helps him develop and discuss interesting topics for his radio program. He also mentioned the debate simply helped him generally in life, and even how it gave him more confidence with girls! Danny talked about his love of sports based arguments and got the crowd of high school students revved up when he mentioned one of his favorite debates: Lebron James vs. Michael Jordan. He finished by taking questions from the crowd that ranged from how to prepare for your first debate tournament to who is a better fantasy player this year, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers.

Then the crowd of 100 high school students from across the metro were treated to a demonstration debate featuring college debaters and three DKC graduates. Corey Fisher and Thalaia Hernandez affirmed that we should end the Patriot Act, restore the 4th Amendment and reduce government surveillance, while Matt Casas and Shawnee Brunson argued that government surveillance as a whole needs to be reformed through a social movement, not government policy. Students were allowed to ask questions after each speech to help them understand the debate process.

After lunch each student was given a small research packet and everyone in the room gave a debate speech. Then the most motivated new recruits took part in a debate on stage. Stand out speakers from the debate were awarded trophies and a sweet DKC sticker. If the energy from this workshop is any indication, DKC will have tons of new recruits ready to compete in the league.

On Tuesday, September 22nd, DEBATE-Kansas City hosted its annual Middle School Recruitment Workshop. Over 200 students from a dozen schools attended and just like the high school students they were greeted by Danny Parkins, who took dozens of questions from the curious crowd. Many of the questions focused on the celebrities Danny had met, like famous athletes, while others were curious about what else Danny might do professionally if was not doing radio.

The DKC middle school students were energized from his presence and then followed the same program as the high school workshop attendees. Below you will find a number of pictures from the event.
